Statement from the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 28, 2007 – “Today the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition (CASEnergy) applauds Dominion for submitting an application for a new nuclear reactor at its North Anna nuclear power plant near Richmond, Virginia. This is the third full application submitted, in less than three months, for a new nuclear power plant. It is one of among 19 filings that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is expecting to receive through 2009, and part of long-term plans for 28 more nuclear reactors throughout the country.

“Dominion has been a strong generator of electricity for Virginia for over thirty years, supplying nearly 15 million megawatts of energy per year at North Anna. One megawatt of electricity can serve about 750-800 homes, and a new reactor at North Anna has the potential to supply 5,726 megawatts of emissions-free electricity.

To sustain Virginia’s economic growth it will need new sources of power to meet this need and a new reactor will meet those needs. CASEnergy congratulates Dominion and will continue its efforts to support production of clean, safe and reliable nuclear energy.”
