On March 12, CASEnergy co-chair Dr. Moore met with several political figures in Wisconsin and testified before a joint committee of the State Legislature as lawmakers considered lifting the moratorium on building new nuclear reactors in the state.
While in Wisconsin, Dr. Moore had a brief discussion about the benefits of nuclear energy with Gov. Jim Doyle’s office. Also, Dr. Moore sat down with Lavilla Capener, communications director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison College Democrats, who recently wrote an op-ed about the benefits of clean and safe nuclear energy.
During his testimony before a joint committee of the Wisconsin State Legislature, Dr. Moore spoke about his assessment that nuclear power is a safe and clean energy source. Dr. Moore also mentioned a host of facts about nuclear energy, contending that nuclear energy should be a part of Wisconsin’s energy mix.
Media coverage of the committee hearing was positive. Dr. Moore’s testimony was covered by The Green Bay Post Gazette, The Manitowoc Herald Times, local Fox affiliate, WLUK-TV , and Wisconsin Public Radio.
In conjunction with the hearing, Dr. Moore also had an op-ed published in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel titled, “Put nuclear energy to work.” In his op-ed, Dr. Moore discusses the need to reduce environmental impact through emissions-free nuclear energy. His op-ed noted that Wisconsin’s three reactors helped prevent the emission of 12.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2007, which is equivalent to taking 1.1 million passenger cars off the road.
Dr. Moore also stated that nuclear energy is “an emission-free, safe and recyclable form of energy, all produced at home while putting U.S. talent to work in high-paying jobs – that’s the kind of green jobs that America’s economy needs.”
