CASEnergy Co-Chairs Gov. Whitman and Dr. Moore published a joint op-ed in The Hill’s Special Report on Energy on September 30. In the piece, “Reaching consensus on nuclear,” the two highlight the current shift in favor of nuclear in the energy debate, as well as the growing diversity among those who recognize that emissions-free nuclear power must be part of a responsible national energy policy. The piece also underscores nuclear’s ability to address increased demand for both clean energy sources and well-paying jobs.
“At a critical time in the energy policy debate, faced with the twin concerns of climate change and rising energy demand, the Obama administration and environmental organizations such as the Pew Center for Climate Change and the Environmental Defense Fund have reached a surprising consensus. Despite past reservations about nuclear energy, they now acknowledge that the nation’s most significant carbon-free electricity source has a role to play in an economically sound, low-carbon energy policy for America.”
The Co-Chairs also cite various independent polling that demonstrates a new majority support for nuclear – 59 percent of Americans nationally, as well as 61 percent among women.
