CASEnergy Co-Chair Christie Whitman Touts Nuclear Power in Top Tier Media Interviews in New York

CASEnergy Co-Chair Governor Christine Todd Whitman traveled to New York City on September 23 for interviews with a wide variety of top-tier broadcast, print and radio outlets, during Climate Week NYC, to discuss nuclear energy’s vital role as part of a sustainable clean energy portfolio.

Gov. Whitman began the day with an appearance on MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie. In the live in-studio interview, Gov. Whitman called for energy legislation that includes nuclear energy as part of a clean “green” energy portfolio, saying: “Nuclear plays under green, clean energy because it’s 70% of our clean energy today and 20% of our overall energy mix… We need to get serious about what our mix of energy is going to look like, and we’ve got to do it now.” The interview can be viewed by clicking here. Gov. Whitman’s interview begins at the 25:35 timestamp.

Following her MSNBC appearance, Gov. Whitman taped an interview with Federal Drive, a morning drive talk radio program broadcast throughout the Washington, D.C. region on Federal News Radio – a station that is geared towards federal government employees. In the interview, which aired during the network’s “Green Week” on September 28, Gov. Whitman provided a comprehensive overview of CASEnergy’s history and mission, and discussed the economic and environmental benefits of nuclear energy. Gov. Whitman once again joined five-time Emmy award winner Dennis Miller on his nationally syndicated talk radio program, the Dennis Miller Show. Dennis is very familiar with CASEnergy as Coalition co-chair Dr. Patrick Moore has also appeared on his program several times. In addition to reminding listeners about the Coalition’s mission and membership, Gov. Whitman called for nuclear expansion as part of a portfolio approach to meet rising energy demand: “We’re not talking about nuclear as adverse to any other kind of power – it’s just part of an overall portfolio. From every aspect that you look at, from economic security to cost to jobs, we’ve got to get serious.”

After wrapping her interview with Dennis Miller, Gov. Whitman was interviewed by Jason Bellini, a freelance journalist who is currently working on a project about nuclear for the Wall Street Journal (online video and print). He videotaped an interview with Gov. Whitman for online posting, and will also turn a corresponding print piece. The discussion focused on the status of new nuclear and what the U.S. needs to do in order to keep pace with countries like China in the clean energy renaissance. The link to both the print piece and online video will be posted once they go live on the Wall Street Journal website.

Gov. Whitman rounded out the day with a live interview on Bloomberg Television’s Street Smart with Carol Massar & Matt Miller. In the interview, Gov. Whitman highlighted the excellent safety record of the nuclear energy industry and underscored the need for a comprehensive portfolio of energy solutions, including new nuclear: “We need them all … but solar and wind are not at a place where they are what is called base power. Nuclear is the only form of base power that releases no greenhouse gases or regulated pollutants while it’s producing power. It’s also one of the most reliable forms of power and on a per-kilowatt basis, one of the least expensive. It’s not a silver bullet… We’re always going to have some coal, we’re going to have some oil and gas. Then we need to have another form of base power that’s clean – and that would be nuclear.”
