CASEnergy Co-Chair Christie Whitman Highlights Benefits of Nuclear Power in Top Tier Media Interviews

CASEnergy Co-Chair Christine Todd Whitman spoke with a variety of top-tier media outlets on Tuesday, October 19 including the Associated Press, Newsweek and state radio outlets WTRH-AM out of Houston, WSTC/WNLK-AM in Fairfield, CT and New York’s nationally syndicated WOR NewsTalk Radio.

  •  Gov. Whitman’s first interview was taped for KTRH-AM Houston’s morning drive talk radio program, Morning News, and aired the next day on Wednesday, October 20. In the interview, Gov. Whitman discussed the growing consensus in favor of nuclear power, citing the March 22nd Gallup poll which shows support for nuclear at an all-time high. Gov. Whitman also called for nuclear expansion as part of a portfolio approach to meet rising energy demand.
  • After wrapping the KTRH-AM interview, Gov. Whitman spoke with Newsweek’s Daniel Stone, a senior reporter in the magazine’s Washington bureau covering national politics and environmental policy. Stone interviewed Gov. Whitman for a piece about the longevity of nuclear power, which is being considered for Newsweek’s upcoming special issue on sustainability due out on December. The link to the piece will be posted once the article is published.
  • After her Newsweek interview, Gov. Whitman spoke with the Associated Press’s Fred Frommer, an energy reporter based in the AP’s Washington bureau. In the 30-minute interview, Gov. Whitman called for energy legislation that includes nuclear energy as part of a clean “green” energy portfolio. Just hours after the interview, Frommer filed his piece, which quotes Gov. Whitman as supporting a move to broaden the renewable electricity standard bill slated to reach the Senate floor following mid-term elections to a “green” standard that includes nuclear.
  • As an AP dispatch, the piece has garnered broad coverage and has been picked up by several top-tier national and regional outlets, including the Washington Post,  CBS News, the San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Times, BusinessWeek.com, WTOP and the Seattle Times. It was also printed in the hard copy of the Star Ledger on Wednesday, October 20.
  • Later in the day, Gov. Whitman taped an interview with Straight Talk with Tonja Walker, a talk radio program that airs on WSTC/WNLK-AM in Fairfield, CT. The interview focused on the environmental benefits of nuclear power England and aired on Sunday, October 24.

Gov. Whitman rounded out the day by once again speaking with Steve Malzberg of New York’s nationally syndicated WOR NewsTalk Radio. In the interview, Gov. Whitman highlighted the economic benefits and job creation potential of nuclear energy, stating: “We have to keep our economy growing, to keep jobs in our country – we need safe and affordable energy. We’re going to look at a 28% increase in electricity demand by 2035 and we’re not going to do it by conservation and renewable energy alone. We need green power – nuclear is the only form of base power, 24/7 always on power, that doesn’t release any of these bad things in the atmosphere while it’s producing power.” Whitman’s interview begins about halfway through this hour-long audio clip.
