Dr. Moore Visits Georgia, Tours Site of the Nation’s Next New Nuclear Reactors

On Jan. 25-26, CASEnergy Co-Chair Dr. Patrick Moore traveled to Georgia to meet with key local individuals and organizations, introducing some to the work of the Coalition, while providing others with an update on recent efforts since his last trip to the region. While in the Peach State, Dr. Moore also had the opportunity to talk to local media in Augusta and Atlanta.

On Jan. 25, Dr. Moore met with the President of Augusta Technical College where a two-year degree is offered through the College’s nuclear engineering program.  Georgia Power offers scholarships to the program, which in addition to financial aid from Augusta Tech, can open up the program to virtually any student who wants to pursue the two-year degree, regardless of their financial situation.

Dr. Moore also took the opportunity to visit Plant Vogtle while in the area. He received an update from Southern Company on the progress of the new reactors 3 and 4 being built on-site, and met with the American Nuclear Society to answer questions and give remarks.

Following the tour of Plant Vogtle, Dr. Moore met with Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and conducted an interview with The Augusta Chronicle, a leading paper in the area, which attended the meeting.  The piece, “Greenpeace founder touts developing nuclear energy,” discusses Dr. Moore’s visit to Plant Vogtle, and highlights his personal conversion story from Greenpeace co-founder to nuclear advocate and CASEnergy co-chair.

“’Public support for nuclear energy has gone nowhere but up in the last 10 years,’ [Moore] said. ‘Many environmental groups are also moderating their opinion of nuclear.’”

On Jan. 26, Dr. Moore addressed an audience of nearly 200 people at the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and many who attended the event decided to join the Coalition.

To close out his time in Georgia, Dr. Moore appeared as a guest on The Helen Blocker-Adams radio program on WKZK, where he addressed job opportunities in the nuclear sector and academic programs like the one at Augusta Tech. WKZK is the oldest Gospel station in the region, and Helen has been voted as one of the 2010 Black Talkers ‘Talented 10’ – the top ten black radio talk show hosts in America.
