Statement from Clean and Safe Energy Coalition on NRC Task Force Report on Nuclear Energy

The findings from a 90-day safety review by a Nuclear Regulatory Commission task force confirm the agency’s high standards of safety continue to be met at America’s nuclear energy facilities.

The NRC’s inspection activity complements significant industry efforts begun within days of the Fukushima Daiichi accident to verify every nuclear power facility’s readiness to maintain safety even during an extreme event, regardless of the cause.  The agency has made clear that any issues identified during its post-Fukushima follow-up inspections do not undermine the facility’s ability to respond to extreme events.  To that end, facilities in the path of a recent string of tornadoes across the Midwest and South and flooding in Nebraska operated safely as designed to withstand such natural disasters.

The NRC and many of our nation’s leaders believe that U.S. reactors are safe and the public will have an opportunity to provide comments on the NRC task force report in the months ahead. Broad public participation in this process is important and our coalition members look forward to participating in this process as the NRC commissioners consider recommendations of the Task Force.  We welcome this opportunity for all interested parties to provide thoughtful feedback to ensure the most effective response and investment of resources.

The industry and independent regulators are taking significant steps to continue to make nuclear energy facilities safer and ensure that they will remain a vital part of a more secure, clean-energy future in this country.
