Support for the Expansion of Nuclear Power and Clean Energy at an All Time High

WASHINGTON, DC, April 22, 2010 – As the United States marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, leaders of the Clean and Safe Energy (CASEnergy) Coalition praise Americans’ growing support of emission-free nuclear power as part of the effort to meet the 80% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions recommended by President Obama and Congress. In order to meet these reductions, America must adopt a diverse energy mix which includes new nuclear combined with the use of renewable energy sources like wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower as well as conservation efforts.

Nuclear energy is an important component of the United States’ diverse energy mix as it produces 20 percent of the nation’s electricity and nearly 75 percent of the nation’s clean energy.

Even with increased conservation and efficiency measures, the U.S. will need 23 percent more electricity by 2030. Nuclear energy is a 24/7 base load power source which can meet that demand both cleanly and reliably. With growing electricity needs and climate change concerns top of mind, support for nuclear energy is at an all-time high. According to the most recent Gallup poll released late last month, 62% of Americans favor the use of nuclear power, the highest percentage since Gallup began polling on the topic in 1994.

U.S. energy policy recommendations reflect the consensus building behind nuclear expansion, evidenced by President Obama’s recent announcement to allocate $8.3 billion in federal loan guarantees to build two new reactors in Georgia and create thousands of new jobs. The president also has recommended tripling the budget for loan guarantees for new nuclear energy facilities.

“This is a remarkable time for those working for clean energy solutions.” said CASEnergy co-chair and former leader of Greenpeace, Dr. Patrick Moore. “The renewed investment in nuclear energy as part of a clean energy policy demonstrates America is serious about reducing air pollution. The round-the-clock baseload production of nuclear energy can power our homes and businesses while creating high paying jobs that cannot be shipped overseas, all without polluting our air.”

This renewed commitment to nuclear energy is good news for the nation’s economy. As the U.S. addresses future electricity production needs and climate change issues, the construction of new nuclear power plants will infuse the economy with much needed new jobs.

Work is well underway for the construction of two nuclear energy plants in Georgia and South Carolina. In Georgia, more than 700 people are already working at state’s largest-ever construction project. At peak construction, about 3,500 new jobs will be created and there will be up to 800 full-time positions once the reactors are producing electricity.

“Nuclear energy projects are the kind of economic boost America needs right now,” explained Christine Todd Whitman, CASEnergy co-chair and former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. “With more than 20 reactors under consideration by the NRC, just imagine what this will mean for America’s struggling economy. While it is not the sole answer to the challenges we face – we can, and must, use more renewable energy and do much more to encourage conservation, but we must also recognize that neither of these approaches, alone, will give us the reliable affordable power we need now and in the future. If we are going to keep our economy growing and our country strong, we need a complete package of approaches to energy and nuclear energy should be a part of the mix.”

WASHINGTON, DC, October 26, 2009 – If we are serious about reducing our fossil fuel emissions as a hedge against the negative effects of climate change while meeting our growing energy demands, we must search for practical answers. Any one energy source alone will not solve our challenges. A diverse portfolio of energy solutions that includes and favors all low-emissions technologies, such as wind, geothermal, and nuclear energy is needed. Of that group, nuclear energy is the only large-scale, virtually carbon-free electricity source, operating efficiently and safely around the clock.

Nuclear energy is uniquely positioned to address some major concerns of climate change — meeting rising electricity demand 24/7 in a cost-efficient way with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. America’s 104 reactors already account for nearly 75 percent of all carbon-free electricity produced today.

Increasing nuclear capability will also mean tens of thousands of additional jobs for our country’s struggling economy. In the past three years, nuclear plant investment has already created an estimated 15,000 new American jobs. Looking forward, as many as 2,400 workers will be needed at a single site during peak periods of new nuclear plant construction. Once completed, 400 to 700 workers will be needed to run each reactor.

Nuclear energy has a scientifically proven ability to provide large quantities of reliable, affordable energy with virtually zero carbon emissions. It should be part of a larger solution—a comprehensive framework developed by Congress that uses all low-carbon energy sources.

Membership surpasses the 2,000 mark reflecting a growing consensus on the benefits of nuclear power

WASHINGTON, DC, July 27, 2009 – Today the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition (CASEnergy) is proud to announce that its membership has exceeded 2,000 with the addition of its newest members – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe Martinez and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC).

“We welcome the opportunity to join the CASEnergy Coalition to demonstrate our support of clean, safe, cost-efficient nuclear energy,” said Ramiro Cavazos, president of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Investing in nuclear power has many positive dividends – the resulting low energy prices help boost our economic development, and the construction and operations of new plants produce permanent, well-paying jobs and revenue for our community. In the long run, we believe that nuclear energy will provide an excellent return on investment for our fast-growing business and residential needs.”

“Nuclear energy provides 20% of the energy in the U.S. and nearly 75% of all clean energy produced,” said Joe Martinez, Miami-Dade County Commissioner. “I joined CASEnergy because I don’t think there is any better baseload power source that will help us meet increasing demands for electricity cleanly and efficiently. Nuclear energy must continue to be part of our overall mix.”

They join an already broad-based national Coalition that supports emissions-free nuclear power as a vital part of a clean energy and global climate change policy. A sample of CASEnergy members representing the Hispanic business and political communities include: Braulio Baez, the former Chairman of the Florida Public Service Commission, Florida State Representatives Luis R. Garcia, Jr. and Carl Domino, Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, the United States Latin Chamber of Commerce, (Florida), the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, 100 Hispanic Women, Inc, and the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce from Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, and Michigan.

CASEnergy is proud of the diversity of its membership – a diversity that reflects the growing consensus of people who recognize both the environmental and economic benefits of nuclear power.

“Our diverse membership reflects the shift in public opinion in favor of new nuclear power – the only clean base-load power that can meet our rising energy demand in an environmentally responsible manner,” said CASEnergy co-chair and Greenpeace co-founder and former leader Dr. Patrick Moore. “This broad-based support is reflected in a recent Zogby International poll that found 67% of Americans surveyed are in favor of new nuclear power.”

“A growing number of Americans recognize that an investment in new nuclear energy is not only smart for the environment, it is also smart for businesses and local communities,” said CASEnergy co-chair and former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Christine Todd Whitman. “With the likelihood of new nuclear power plants and a retiring workforce, we’re looking at the possible creation of thousands of new jobs that cannot be sent overseas.”

Since its inception in April 2006, CASEnergy has attracted a diverse membership of consumer, business, conservation, environmental, academic, health care, and labor groups, as well as state and community leaders in support of clean and safe nuclear energy to meet our nation’s current and future energy needs.

WASHINGTON, DC, April 22, 2009 – As the U.S. celebrates the 39th Anniversary of Earth Day, leaders of the Clean and Safe Energy (CASEnergy) Coalition recognize the growing support of environmentally friendly, emission-free nuclear power as part of the effort to build a sustainable, clean-energy economy, with the added benefit of creating thousands of well-paying green jobs in the U.S.

“Nuclear power accounts for nearly 75 percent of all clean energy produced in the U.S. because it is virtually carbon free electricity,” said CASEnergy co-chair and Greenpeace co-founder and former leader Dr. Patrick Moore. “Even with increased conservation and efficiency measures, the U.S. will need 21 percent more electricity by 2030. And because nuclear energy is a 24/7 base load power source which can meet that demand both cleanly and reliably, it is not surprising that a recent Zogby International poll found that 67% of Americans support new nuclear power.”

As the U.S. addresses climate change issues against the backdrop of the current economic landscape, the construction of new nuclear power plants has the potential to infuse the economy with well-needed new jobs.

“A commitment to building new nuclear plants ensures the prospect of new jobs across America,” said CASEnergy co-chair and former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Christine Todd Whitman.

“According to the latest figures in the CASEnergy white paper, Job Creation in the Nuclear Renaissance:

As many as 2,400 new jobs would be created during the construction of each reactor

Once built, each reactor will provide 400-700 full-time jobs

If the more than 30 reactors now under consideration are built, 12,000 to 21,000 new jobs would be added to the economy.”

Moreover, private new nuclear plant investment has already created 14,000 – 15,000 new jobs. The CASEnergy Coalition is also pleased to announce its 1900th member – the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The diversity of the coalition is a reflection of the growing broad-based support of nuclear energy due to the undeniable benefits of clean, safe, cost-efficient nuclear energy.

Greenpeace Co-founder and CASEnergy Coalition Co-chair to be honored with 2009 Einstein Society Award for achievement in nuclear energy science

Vancouver (March 6, 2009) – Greenpeace co-founder and CASEnergy Coalition Co-chair Dr. Patrick Moore will receive the National Award for Nuclear Science from the Einstein Society in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at a gala dinner on March 7.

The award is granted to an individual each year to “honor and celebrate the wide scope of achievement and commitment to furthering scientific endeavor made by individuals in areas of military leadership, medical technology, public policy and government, energy sciences, education and space exploration.” Dr. Moore is being recognized for his work in education and advocacy. He is co-chair of the Clean and Safe Energy (CASEnergy) Coalition, a grassroots coalition that unites unlikely allies across the business, environmental, academic, consumer and labor community to support nuclear energy.

Dr. Moore was a director and leader of Greenpeace from its founding in Vancouver, Canada in 1971 to oppose US hydrogen bomb testing in Alaska. Since leaving Greepeace in 1986, his position on nuclear energy has changed, and today he recognizes it is a clean and safe energy technology that can play an important role in reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

“We got a lot of things right in the early years of the environmental movement; stop the bomb, save the whales, end toxic waste dumping,” stated Dr. Moore. “But we made one serious mistake when we included nuclear energy in with nuclear weapons as if all things nuclear were evil. This was as misguided as if we had included nuclear medicine with nuclear weapons. Both nuclear energy and nuclear medicine are beneficial uses of nuclear technology, using otherwise dangerous radioactive elements to improve our quality of life.”

“This was at the height of the Cold War and the height of the Vietnam War when we feared annihilation by all-out nuclear war. I believe that our understandable emotional reaction to the threat of nuclear weapons colored our attitude to all things nuclear,” continued Dr. Moore. “This is regrettable because there would be a lot fewer coal-fired power plants and a lot more clean nuclear plants today if we had seen things more objectively at the time.”

“It is gratifying that while some environmental groups remain staunchly opposed to nuclear energy, others are recognizing that it has a role to play,” said Dr. Moore. “Just last week a group of four prominent environmentalists in the UK, including Stephen Tindale who led Greenpeace UK until 2006, came out publicly in favor of nuclear power. This is just the beginning of a realization among environmentalists that the way forward is a combination of renewable energy and nuclear energy.”

In addition to his role with CASEnergy Coalition, Dr. Moore is Chair and Chief Scientist of Greenspirit Strategies Ltd. in Vancouver, Canada. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of British Columbia and in 2005 received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from North Carolina State University

The award ceremony and dinner will take place at 6 PM, March 7 at the Albuquerque Sheraton Uptown. For details see: http://nuclearsciencemuseum.blogspot.com

About The CASEnergy Coalition:

The CASEnergy Coalition is a large grassroots coalition that unites unlikely allies across the business, environmental, academic, consumer and labor community to support nuclear energy. We believe that nuclear energy can improve energy security, ensure clean air quality, and enhance the quality of life and economic well-being of all Americans. The Coalition is led by Christine Todd Whitman, former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and former New Jersey Governor, and Patrick Moore, a co-founder and former leader of Greenpeace.

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 24, 2008 – A new report released in Davos, ‘Global Risks 2008,’ proposes the world’s first ‘nuclear fuel insurance fund’, which would guarantee supplies and discourage the spread of enrichment facilities by creating a partnership between financial industries and governments.

CASEnergy co-chair Dr. Patrick Moore said today that he’s, “encouraged by the discussion of nuclear from top business executives, political leaders, and nongovernmental organizations from around the world. The only way to meet challenges of climate change is through collaboration and innovation at a global level.“

In a session today entitled, “Nuclear Energy vs. Non-Proliferation,” WEF participants agreed that nuclear power’s benefits include, “CO2-free power generation, reliable power generation, and low per-unit direct cost to consumers.”

CASEnergy co-chairs urge WEF participants to acknowledge that global benefits of nuclear power, energy security, and diversification from fossil-fuels can be balanced with the risks. Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest ways to meet rising energy demand worldwide, and is a vital part of any discussions about energy solutions at a global or national level.

Washington, D.C., January 7 2009 – Although the U.S. economic crisis continues to impact a growing number of companies, the nuclear energy industry is producing thousands of green jobs in advance of new nuclear plant construction.

A new advertisement by the Clean and Safe Energy (CASEnergy) Coalition informs readers of the nuclear energy industry’s role in creating thousands of high-paying green jobs. Currently, more than 70% of U.S. carbon-free energy is generated by nuclear power. The advertisement was published Jan. 6 in Politico, a major Capitol Hill newspaper, and will also run in two other Beltway mainstays, The Hill and Roll Call.

Though 26 new reactor projects are in the early stages of the federal licensing process, the required groundwork prior to construction already has stimulated significant investment and job creation among companies that supply equipment and services to the nuclear industry.

The advertisement points out organizations as diverse as organized labor, consumer groups, environmentalists, health care advocates, business groups, educational institutions and state and community leaders support nuclear energy because of its many benefits, including job creation.

“Chaired by former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and Dr. Patrick Moore, the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition has brought together more than 1,800 organizations and decision-makers united in the belief that an expanded use of nuclear energy is critical to a secure and low-carbon energy future,” the advertisement says.

According to recent analyses, AREVA, Westinghouse, GE Nuclear Energy, The Shaw Group and Northup Grumman Shipbuilding are among the companies who have already hired hundreds of new workers and are projecting thousands of new hires in 2009 and beyond. On average, construction of a new nuclear power plant represents 1,400-1,800 jobs during construction, with as many as 2,400 jobs at peak construction.

During production, a nuclear power plant represents 400-700 permanent jobs that pay 36% more than average salaries in the surrounding community, and are matched by an equivalent number of jobs in the area to provide goods and services to support the power plant, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).

CASEnergy white paper addresses job creation in the nuclear renaissance

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 17, 2008 – The Clean and Safe Energy Coalition (CASEnergy Coalition) today released a new white paper titled, Job Creation in the Nuclear Renaissance that catalogues the potential for tens of thousands of American jobs in the nuclear energy industry in the next decade.

Coalition Co-chair Christine Todd Whitman, former EPA administrator and New Jersey governor, was joined by a diverse group of leaders to support the positive economic and environmental impact of nuclear energy in the United States. Among those who support the findings of the white paper are:

U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE)

U.S. Senator George Voinovich (R-OH)

U.S. Representative James Clyburn (D-SC)

U.S. Representative Fred Upton (R-MI)

U.S. Representative Jason Altmire (D-PA)

Mayor Bill Saffo, Wilmington, NC

John Engler, President and CEO, National Association of Manufacturers

Mark Ayers, President, Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO

Dr. Patrick Moore, Co-Founder, Greenpeace

Lisa Stiles, Project Manager, Strategic Staffing and Knowledge Management, Dominion Nuclear

Michael Kurzeja, Vice President, North American Young Generation in Nuclear

Gilbert J. Brown, Ph.D., Professor and Coordinator, Nuclear Engineering Program, University of Massachusetts Lowell

The white paper examines the job growth potential for existing and future nuclear power plants and finds that nuclear plants are a boon to local economies. Altogether, 12,000 to 21,000 new jobs will be added to the U.S. market if some 30 reactors currently planned for construction are built. These are long-term jobs that would exist throughout the operation of the reactor, promising decades of employment.

Each nuclear plant provides 400 to 700 high-paying jobs.

Depending on construction methods, each new reactor could require as many as 4,000 workers per project at peak periods.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median annual salary for nuclear engineers is $82,900 — approximately $8,000 more than all other engineering disciplines except petroleum engineering.

Each of the country’s 104 reactors generates an estimated $430 million a year in total output for the local community, and nearly $40 million per year in total labor income.

“Nuclear power provides a clean energy solution that produces no greenhouse gases and is good for the economy,” said Whitman. “A renewed focus on nuclear energy will translate into tens of thousands of high-paying American jobs needed to build and operate new reactors.”

The CASEnergy white paper details the favorable impact of the nuclear industry’s resurgence on jobs and the economy—this at a time when employment is currently 5.5% and the country needs 25 percent more electricity by 2030, according to projections by the U.S. Department of Energy.

To realize the economic potential that new reactor projects offer, the nation must invest in the education infrastructure needed to cultivate the next generation of workers. Close collaboration between energy companies, government and secondary educational institutions is critical. Although interest among students in nuclear energy careers is growing rapidly, new reactor construction may be the next catalyst to drive enrollment in college and university programs and create substantial numbers of new nuclear professionals.

New nuclear plants will also drive the demand for skilled craft labor focused on three areas—construction, operation and maintenance. As many as 185,000 new construction workers will be needed in the nuclear energy industry by 2015 for new positions and to replace approximately 95,000 retiring workers. Joint apprenticeship and training programs in the building and construction industry are important to ensure that the industry maintains a highly skilled work force.

The CASEnergy Coalition and its more than 1,600 members will work to promote the use of nuclear energy to stimulate our nation’s economy and protect our environment, but it calls on industry, government and educators for support. The need for energy is a non-partisan issue and the support for nuclear energy is bi-partisan. Those who authored a foreword to the white paper stated:

“We need to establish a safe, clean nuclear industry to protect our nation’s future energy security and reduce the threat of global warming. Congress must provide support and incentives to the nuclear industry to help redevelop its workforce, facilities and capacity, which, in turn, can restore our lead in safe, efficient nuclear manufacturing, while creating tens of thousands of highly-skilled jobs.” — U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety

“Nuclear power is growing in the world and our own energy and environmental needs can serve as a springboard to rebuild American technology and manufacturing capabilities to something approaching the leadership the nation once enjoyed, contributing to foreign markets as well as supporting our own. A recent nuclear energy roundtable that Senator Carper and I co-chaired in November with representatives of the government, industry, academia, and labor leaders including John Sweeney of the AFL-CIO, confirmed my belief that the ongoing resurgence in nuclear power provides a unique opportunity for the United States to reclaim its leadership role in the advancement of nuclear technologies and revitalizing nuclear component manufacturing base which should create many high paying jobs for American workers.”— U.S. Senator George Voinovich (R-OH), Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety

“Through a renewed commitment to nuclear power, we have a unique opportunity, and a responsibility, to simultaneously cut greenhouse gases, maintain the affordability of our electricity supply, and give a boost to our ailing economy. The construction of dozens of new plants on American soil will foster the rebirth of our domestic manufacturing industry and create tens of thousands of new, high-paying jobs. Not only will our environment be better for it, our national security will also be fortified. Millions of households will be powered by zero-emission nuclear power and our nation’s economy will be powered by nuclear as well.” — U.S. Congressman Fred Upton (MI), ranking Republican on the House Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality

“In light of what high gas prices are doing not only to our local economy, but our national and global economy, the time to act with respect to alternative and renewable energy sources is now. Nuclear energy is a clean and efficient form of power. Its potential is important to our energy policy nationally. It is proven over the years to be safe and reliable and will play a large role as one of our sources to overcome our dependence on foreign oil.” — Bill Saffo, Mayor of Wilmington, N.C.

“We must continue to support the expansion of nuclear energy to maintain jobs and economic growth in America. A robust economy demands more energy, even as we pursue alternative means such as conservation and efficiency. Failure to supply those increased energy demands will raise energy costs for manufacturers and consumers and hurt our global competitiveness.” —John Engler, President and CEO, National Association of Manufacturers

“As a college student, I chose to study nuclear engineering because I was fascinated by the science and I believed nuclear science and technology make important contributions to society. Working in the industry more than met those expectations and I’ve enjoyed many challenging opportunities to learn and grow. Plus, I know I’m doing my part to make the world a better place.” — Lisa Stiles, Project Manager, Strategic Staffing and Knowledge Management, Dominion Nuclear.

“The industry needs engineers, technicians and other professionals to support, operate and maintain existing nuclear plants. Moreover, well educated and trained workers are needed for all of the new plants that are being ordered to meet growing energy demand while cutting emissions of carbon dioxide and to conduct research and development on the next generation of reactors. To cultivate job creation and seize on the opportunities ahead, we must invest in our educational infrastructure by strengthening existing educational and training programs while developing new and innovative programs to attract and retain a skilled workforce.” — Gilbert J. Brown, PhD., Professor and Coordinator, Nuclear Engineering Program, University of Massachusetts Lowell

“The nuclear industry is experiencing growth in both new plant builds and a multitude of exciting, rewarding and diverse job opportunities. Today’s young professionals in the nuclear industry are excited to be part of an industry that will not only support long-term career opportunities but also provides the world with clean, safe, and reliable energy and innovative nuclear science & technology solutions.” — Michael Kurzeja, Vice President, North American Young Generation in Nuclear
